About the course

In this course, participants will learn how to author and implement innovative formative assessments. Applying a strategy that focuses on verbs and utilizing key concepts from Wiggins and McTighe’s Understanding by Design, we cover how actions words become guides to instruction, as well as metrics for nurturing students understanding and knowledge transferability. Formative assessment is developmental instruction which can be scaled from simple to complex student performance and is particularly useful when transitioning from classroom to online learning. Participants will be working experientially, developing content inspired by specific verb lists based on their own research and personal discovery. As a culminating activity, each participant will complete a unit or module level for their own course, including a scalable plan which will assess their students' conceptual understanding and ability to apply that understanding in creative ways. JUST-IN-TIME courses are asynchronous, allowing participants to take courses when convenient, according to their individual schedules. The courses are experiential, allowing teachers to understand how course concepts will work from both the student’s and teacher's perspective. While designed for the individual, participants are not alone. An AVLI team member will guide each participant through designing, creating, editing, and completing course content through focused backwards design methodologies.
