
Course Description
This course introduces the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) used by the Deaf Community, including vocabulary, syntax, fingerspelling, and grammatical non-manual signals. In addition, instruction focuses on communicative competence, developing gestural skills as a foundation for ASL enhancement, and introducing
cultural knowledge, thereby increasing understanding of the Deaf Community.
This course requires weekly engagement but is primarily asynchronous which allows students to work around their school schedule. There is a synchronous meeting that will take place one evening per week that students are expected to attend. Meeting times to be determined at the beginning of the term.

Dr. Wooten
Dr. Wooten is a CODA and her academic background includes a Master's Degree in Deaf Education and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with focus on Deaf Education at the college level. Her deaf parents live in North Carolina and have raised her to love to cherish the Deaf culture, community, and this amazing language that she loves teaching and sharing with anyone that will "listen".
