Artificial intelligence is here and it's only going to get more sophisticated. How do we negotiate a landscape that seems to be shifting with every step? By staying true to who we are, what we teach, and why it matters, we can harness the promise of advanced technologies while managing the pitfalls. View the program details below.

Purpose and Description

This intimate conference is designed for teachers in secondary education who want to embrace the struggle to shape an effective, affirming learning future that recognizes the role technologies can and should play.

This is a hybrid program consisting of a series of pre-conference learning activities and exercises to prepare participants for structured, guided worktime at the Institute.

Pre-conference Work

To prepare for the gathering in Cleveland, participants will take part in pre-conference activities and discussions beginning on June 1st. This online experience will give participants the opportunity to experiment with AI tools, share their concerns and hopes for the future of their classes, and shape a concrete plan for what they hope to accomplish at the gathering in Cleveland.

Program Outcomes

On June 27th we will come together for a three-day retreat-style gathering, allowing teachers valuable time away to think and plan creatively for the coming year. During this three-day experience, teachers will focus on:

  • Expanding their understanding of the AI tools that are out there and how they can be used by students and teachers in both productive and potentially concerning ways.

  • Strategizing ways to develop a proactive relationship with students in which they can openly discuss the advantages, disadvantages, and temptations associated with technology.

  • Finding ways to clearly communicate with students about essential learning and skills: what do we really need them to do on their own and why?

  • Creating engaging new learning experiences in which AI is used to enhance and deepen learning outcomes.

  • Planning effective, authentic, and valid assessment strategies in the face of new and emerging technologies.

Here's a general overview of what participants can expect.
