
Course Description
The AP Music Theory course corresponds to two semesters of typical introductory college music theory class. Topics include musicianship, theory, musical materials and procedures, dictation and listening skills, sight-singing, and harmony. The goal is to develop the ability to recognize, understand and describe basic materials and processes of tonal music that are heard or presented in a musical score. Notational skills, speed, and fluency with basic materials are emphasized.
Students who complete this course are encouraged and eligible to take the AP Music Theory examination in the Spring. This course requires weekly engagement but is primarily asynchronous, allowing students to work around their school schedule. One-on-one synchronous teacher support is offered as needed, by appointment.

Dr. Hernandez-Ching
Dr. Hernández-Ching has been the Director of Orchestras at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston Texas since 2000. In addition to his ensembles, he also teaches Music Theory and Digital Audio Production. Under Mr. Hernández-Ching’s baton, the Strake Jesuit & St. Agnes chamber orchestra became the first private school ensemble to merit a Sweepstakes Award at University Interscholastic League Concert andSight Reading Festival for Texas Music Educators Association in the Houston Area and consistently receives TPSMEA Concert and Sight Reading superior awards.
