CUSTOM COURSEWORK PROGRAM

AVLI’s Custom Coursework Program supports students who must be away from school—whether for illness, injury, travel, or elite-level athletics—by offering academic instruction that aligns with their school’s curriculum. Through close collaboration with schools and families, the program helps minimize lost learning and ensures students stay on track at the level of their academic needs.

WHAT IS THE CUSTOM COURSEWORK PROGRAM & WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

AVLI partners with member schools to provide flexible academic programming that supports students during extended absences and eases their transition back to the classroom. The program minimizes disruption while offering personalized instruction from caring, dedicated teachers to support students both academically and emotionally.

Recognizing the importance of a smooth return, AVLI collaborates closely with families and schools to ensure consistent communication and alignment. Each student’s program is tailored with customized curriculum, pacing, and assessments based on the school’s reintegration goals.

With NCAA-approved, standards-based courses, students can transition between their school and AVLI with confidence in academic continuity. For those needing more structure or support due to learning differences, executive functioning challenges, or other factors, customizable teacher engagement ensures the guidance they need to succeed.

HEALTH-RELATED SITUATIONS

In cases where a student is participating in Inpatient or Outpatient care, AVLI can work directly with healthcare providers and family members to ensure the student receives targeted instruction tailored to their unique needs.

AVLI remains closely connected with the school, family, student, and medical team, when involved, throughout the hospital stay and after discharge. Our goal is to collaborate and coordinate a team-based approach that minimizes academic loss and supports a thoughtful, successful transition back to school.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS

While originally created to support students facing illness or injury, the Custom Coursework Program has expanded to serve those pursuing opportunities beyond the classroom. AVLI now partners with schools to support elite athletes, traveling students, and those seeking academic enrichment for college preparation.

In these cases, our goal is to facilitate student opportunities beyond the classroom while ensuring that students meet the academic requirements and standards of their schools.

THE CUSTOM COURSEWORK PROCESS

step 1

CHANGE

Something changes in the student’s experience that disrupts their ability to be present at school. At some point, it becomes clear that the student can no longer continue with regular programming provided by their school and concerns about academic loss arise.

step 2

CONTACT

AVLI partners directly with member schools, so all inquiries about the Custom Coursework Program should begin with the school. If a parent contacts AVLI directly, we redirect them back to the school to ensure the proper protocols are followed and to support a coordinated approach.

step 3

PLANNING

AVLI and the school design a tailored academic program that supports the student’s academic*, social, and emotional needs. This student-centered approach reflects our accompaniment model, meeting learners where they are.

step 6

COMPLETION

The courses are complete! AVLI sends the school a record of all assessment grades and/or a transcript credit.

step 5

REPORTING

Every Friday, AVLI sends a progress update to the student, their family, and the school. Updates include the student’s current grade and the percentage of the course completed to that point. This information helps identify when follow-up communication may be needed to support the student’s progress.

step 4

COURSEWORK

Once the program is in place, AVLI begins working directly with the student.* They follow a self-paced or teacher-guided schedule, complete assessments, and receive timely feedback. Meetings with the teacher occur as needed, based on the student’s customized plan.

step 7

RE-ENGAGE

The student returns to their school and re-engages their learning. Transitional re-entry plans may also be coordinated between the school, family and AVLI in the days/weeks prior to full-time re-entry, as needed.

*Planning note: AVLI academic programming includes a range of NCAA, core standards based courses, and AP course offerings. Teachers at the student's school review the syllabi and select the exact topics/units they want the student to cover during the time in which the student will be away from school, including the sequence of engagement. This allows for a clear transition back to the academic programming in each of the student's regular classes upon re-entry

*Coursework note: As the student begins their work directly with AVLI, classes and assessments continue as normal at their school.
