- The Productive Struggle
Keeping Learners in the Zone < Back The Productive Struggle Keeping Learners in the Zone Tuesday, March 24th 4:30 EST/3:30 CST/2:30 MST/1:30 PST Program Overview The ability to struggle, persist, and keep going when things get hard is profoundly human. Yet in classrooms, struggle is often something we rush to remove. The Productive Struggle invites educators to rethink challenge, not as an obstacle to learning, but as its engine. Drawing on human physiology and cognitive science, this webinar explores how attention, emotion, and motivation shape a learner’s capacity to stay engaged, and why learning thrives in a zone that sits between boredom and frustration. Participants will explore what it means to elevate practice by adopting a simplified model of human motivation, one that relies on well-designed tasks, intentional teacher moves, and the power of community. - Anoosheh A | Arrupe Virtual Learning Institute
Anoosheh values AVLI’s flexibility and advises planning ahead, managing screen time, and reaching out to teachers for support. All Highlights STUDENT HIGHLIGHT Senior Anoosheh A. Valley Catholic High School AVLI Courses Taken AP Computer Science Multivariable Calculus What piece of advice would you give a student considering taking an AVLI course? As the courses are online, a number of different platforms and websites are used so get ready to be staring at a screen a lot. If you're taking classes in-person or have sports and other extracurriculars going on, it can be incredibly helpful to work ahead. You'll be able to see how far into the course you are and the breaks are given upfront in the syllabus, but they might not be the same as your schools, so don't assume anything. The course is pretty self-lead, but still reach out to your course teachers and even teachers you know at your school. Though there will likely be some weekly zoom meeting, your teachers are willing to schedule with you one on one to help you succeed. What surprised you most about your AVLI course experience? I found it really nice to be able to see what would be due throughout the week - not something I normally have with my at school classes. Even though check-ins are required for the courses I am taking, teachers are pretty flexible and as long as you make sure to do your work it isn't the end of the world if you're not able to make the zoom meetings. The flexibility also goes for if I have a lot going on and might not be able to submit something by the due date. The teachers are willing to work with you.
- ADDITIONAL SUPPORT | Arrupe Virtual Learning Institute
Gain information about additional AVLI support, including tutoring services, counseling, and resources for students with learning differences. It emphasizes personalized attention and accessibility for all students to ensure academic success and overall well-being. ADDITIONAL SUPPORT When something else is needed... Whether it's an illness, injury, or an opportunity, many students' path through the high school years is not always straight. AVLI may be able to help you and your child's school devise a way forward should your child require an extended leave. Here are some things to consider that may be useful as you open a conversation with your school. Who to contact at your child's school. Typically, the assistant principal of academics and/or your child's guidance counsellor would be good starting points. What to discuss. When meeting with someone from your school, it's important to clearly identify goals and outcomes. This begins with an honest assessment of your child's academic standing relating to graduation, and their capacity for engaging in school work under current circumstances. The next step is to determine if you are in need of full credit-bearing coursework or a shorter term curricular solution to bridge a learning gap that allows your child to more seamlessly integrate back into the classroom upon their return to school. Next, it's important to consider how the school can meet your child's needs internally. This tends to be the best option. If you and the school come to the conclusion that a gap exists between your child's needs and what your school can offer, then engaging AVLI makes sense. Have your child's school reach out to us. AVLI has a host of customizable curricular and teacher options that we can explore together. For this to work, however, the school must take the lead to ensure the solution designed provides your child their best opportunity for success. We are looking for content experts, but more importantly, teachers who recognize that this content does not exist in a box. Rather, it is a pathway for students to better understand and appreciate the world around them. TEACHER OPPORTUNITIES We're looking for a particular brand of teacher. Of course we are looking for content experts. More importantly, though, we are looking for teachers who recognize that this content does not exist in a box. Rather, it is a pathway for students to better understand and appreciate the world around them. We want teachers who are passionate about the profession, particularly within the Catholic context. Teachers who are learners themselves and who want to be part of a collegial community focused on the betterment of pedagogical practice. We want tinkerers. Teachers who are never quite satisfied with the status quo. Reflective teachers who see calculated innovation as a means of better serving students. Lastly, we want teachers who value young people. Who recognize the power and importance of adult accompaniment as students imperfectly negotiate their learning within the context of life’s challenges. AVLI gives its teachers the tools and resources to develop highly innovative courses. This keeps teachers engaged and enthusatic about their own subject, allowing them to evolve and refine their expression as an educator and resulting in an infinitely more meaningful and enjoyable experience for students. Taiko Haessler, PhD, AVLI Teacher What it takes to be an AVLI teacher.
